Discussion Questions

1. Do the characters' past influence their behaviors and lives afterwards? Have they move on to accepting new cultural differences or are they still nostalgic to their pasts? Give some specific examples.

2. Is the death of Ashoke Ganguli influential? If yes, who is/are affected by it? What role does his death play in regarding to the whole plot of the novel?

3. Do you think Gogol would grow up as a different person if he is born as Nikhil Ganguli? Are both of the names important in The Namesake or does Lahiri want to emphasize one more than the another?

4. Two most essential affairs that Gogol has are the affair with Maxine and the marriage with Moushumi. What do you think both reveal about his personalities? Why do you think that Lahiri terminates the marriage between Gogol and Moushumi at last?

5. Besides Ashima, do other characters experience the feeling of "foreignness?" If yes, give some examples? What do those characters have in common with you when you first experience a new culture?

  1. 1. Ashoke's experience of being in the train crash affected his life, and the way he lived after the crash. He decided to make a new life for himself in America, but the thought of the train crash was always in the back of his mind. Gogol is also affected at an early age regarding his name, and he never truly knew his identity. It shapes how he lives throughout the novel. Gogol wants to live the in American culture, and he tries to break free from his Indian roots. However, his parents, especially Ashima holds onto her Indian culture as much as possible. Ahima tries to go home whenever she can, and she also has Bengali friends over often. Ashima is nostalgic of the past, whereas Gogol is hopeful to move onto the the future.
