The Namesake
is a story about the Ganguli family - an immigrant family which moved from Calcutta, India to New York. The novel focuses on how the Gangulis try maintaining their traditional customs while blending along with the American culture. It differentiates the two generations of the parents who move to the United States and their children who are actually borned and raised there. The novel's protagonist is Gogol, who is the son of Ashima and Ashoke. The novel emphasizes on demonstrating the struggle of Gogol between two separate cultures, and the way he tries to find his real identity.The title "The Namesake" refers to two different ways that Gogol Ganguli is called. The title tackles the question of realizing Gogol's true identity and therefore constitutes an important part in the plot of the novel.
There was also a movie adaption to the novel in March 2006. It was released in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and India.
